Semax and selank are two Russian nootropic peptides that people compare because they do different jobs. Semax is studied for focus, memory, and mental drive. Selank is studied for calm and stress resilience. Semax works mainly through BDNF, a brain growth signal. Selank works mainly through GABA, a calming pathway. Most people are not choosing a winner. They are choosing the one that fits their goal. Here is how they compare in 2026.

Semax vs selank: the short answer

Semax is the focus peptide. Selank is the calm peptide. Semax is studied for attention, memory, and mental energy, and it acts mainly by raising BDNF, a signal tied to brain-cell growth. Selank is studied for stress and calm, and it acts mainly on the GABA system, the brain's brake pedal. If your goal is sharper thinking, semax is the one people reach for. If your goal is a steadier, less anxious baseline, selank is the one people reach for.

Both come from Russian research labs, and both are usually studied as a nasal spray or a small injection. Neither is offered by pru today. See how pru plans to offer peptides like these in the how pru handles semax and selank section below.

Not medical adviceSemax and selank are studied for focus, calm, and stress, and are not treatments for anxiety, depression, ADHD, or any diagnosed condition. If you manage a mental-health condition, work with a licensed clinician before adding anything new.

Semax and selank side by side

Here is the fast comparison. Semax leans stimulating and cognitive. Selank leans calming and steadying. They target different brain systems, which is why some people treat them as a pair rather than rivals.

What is semax?

Semax is a synthetic peptide built from a short piece of ACTH, a natural hormone. Chemists took the ACTH(4-10) fragment and added a Pro-Gly-Pro tail to make it more stable. It does not act like the parent hormone. Instead, it is studied as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent. In Russia it has been registered as a drug since 1994 for stroke recovery and cognitive complaints.

The most-cited finding is on BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. In rat studies, a single dose of semax raised BDNF-related gene activity in the hippocampus, the brain's memory hub, by roughly two to three fold. BDNF supports the growth and survival of brain cells, which is the leading theory for why semax is studied for learning and focus. This evidence comes from animal studies alongside Russian clinical use.

  • Studied for: attention, working memory, mental stamina, and recovery after brain stress
  • Mechanism theory: higher BDNF and trkB activity, plus effects on dopamine and other messengers
  • Typical study format: intranasal drops or spray, or a small subcutaneous injection
  • Research base: animal studies plus Russian clinical use since 1994

What is selank?

Selank is a synthetic peptide modeled on tuftsin, a natural immune-signaling molecule. Its sequence is Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, a heptapeptide developed at the same Russian institute as semax. It is studied mainly for calm and stress, and it is described as anxiolytic, meaning anxiety-reducing, without the sedation or dependence linked to many calming drugs.

Selank is thought to work as a positive modulator of GABA, the brain's main calming signal, and it also touches serotonin and enkephalin pathways. In Russian clinical trials it was studied in people with generalized anxiety, where researchers reported calm comparable to benzodiazepine medications but without the drowsiness, tolerance, or withdrawal.

  • Studied for: calm, stress resilience, and steady mood, plus some immune signaling
  • Mechanism theory: modulates GABA, serotonin, and enkephalins; also linked to BDNF
  • Typical study format: intranasal drops or spray, or a small injection
  • Research base: Russian human trials plus animal work

For the full breakdown, see the selank guide and peptides for anxiety and mood. Selank is studied for calm, and is not a treatment for any anxiety disorder.

How semax and selank differ

The core difference is direction. Semax pushes the gas: it is studied to lift focus, memory, and drive. Selank taps the brake: it is studied to lower stress and steady mood. They target different systems, so they rarely feel the same.

The main split between the two peptides.

There is some overlap. Both are studied for clearer thinking, and both are described as non-sedating. But if you had to sum it up: semax is for the goal of doing more, and selank is for the goal of feeling settled while you do it.

Can you take semax and selank together?

Some people do combine semax and selank, and the pairing is sometimes called the Russian nootropic stack. The logic is simple: semax for focus, selank for calm, so you get drive without the wired, anxious edge. Compounded nasal sprays that blend both peptides exist in the grey market, often at a set ratio.

One thing to know. Today these blends are sold research-grade, with no prescriber checking whether it fits you and no licensed pharmacy verifying what is in the bottle. That sourcing gap is the real risk, not the idea of pairing focus with calm.

On combining anythingIf you take an SSRI, a benzodiazepine, or any psychiatric medication, talk to the clinician who manages that prescription before adding a peptide. Semax and selank are studied for calm and focus, and combining them with psychiatric medication should be supervised.

Semax or selank: which fits your goal?

Pick by the outcome you want, not by which is stronger. If your problem is focus, choose semax. If your problem is stress, choose selank. If it is both, that is why the two get paired.

  • Choose semax if: you want sharper focus, better recall on study or work days, or mental stamina
  • Choose selank if: you feel wired, anxious, or scattered and want a calmer, steadier baseline
  • Consider both if: you want focus without the jittery edge, and you are working with a clinician
  • Work with a clinician first if: you have a diagnosed condition, so a peptide fits alongside your care

Are semax and selank safe?

Both peptides show mild side-effect profiles in the available research. Reported effects are usually minor. The bigger safety question in 2026 is not the molecule. It is where the vial came from.

  • Semax: reported effects are mild, most often nasal irritation from the spray or brief overstimulation
  • Selank: reported effects are mild, sometimes mild tiredness or nasal irritation; no dependence reported in trials
  • Both: injectable peptides carry an unassessed immune-response risk that the FDA has flagged
  • Both: purity and dose are only as trustworthy as the source, which is the main grey-market risk

Mental-health safetyNeither peptide is a treatment for anxiety, depression, PTSD, or ADHD, and neither replaces therapy or medication. If you live with a diagnosed condition, keep your clinician in the loop and do not stop prescribed care to try a peptide.

For a fuller list, see semax side effects.

The status is changing. On April 15, 2026, the FDA removed 12 peptides from the 503A Category 2 list, the group of substances flagged as significant compounding risks. On July 23 and 24, 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee, or PCAC, reviewed 7 of them to decide whether they should join the approved list for 503A pharmacy compounding.

Semax was on the July 24 agenda, alongside DSIP and epitalon. Selank was not on the July 2026 review list. Removal from Category 2 is not FDA approval, and it does not yet place a peptide on the authorized 503A list. A positive committee vote starts a rulemaking process; the FDA can still accept, change, or reject it.

What this means todayRight now, semax and selank are mostly sold research-grade or grey-market, with no prescriber and no licensed pharmacy. That is the real risk. The regulated path, a physician prescription filled by a 503A pharmacy, is what the July 2026 review could open for peptides like semax.

How pru handles semax and selank

pru does not offer semax or selank today. We are preparing to offer peptides like these the regulated way, once the pathway is clear, rather than shipping research-grade vials now. The model stays the same across everything pru offers: you select the peptide with guidance from our content, a licensed physician confirms it fits you, and an FDA-regulated 503A pharmacy compounds and fills it.

Membership runs about $50 a month, and peptides are billed separately at cost, itemized, with no markup. Being proactive about your focus and stress is a smart move, and pru exists to make the informed, physician-backed version of that choice the accessible one.

  • Prescriber-led: a licensed physician reviews your intake and confirms clinical fit; pru never has a doctor pick a peptide for you
  • Pharmacy-grade: filling is done by an FDA-regulated 503A compounding pharmacy, not a grey-market seller
  • Roadmap for semax: pending the July 2026 PCAC review and the FDA's follow-up, we plan to add it the right way if the pathway opens
  • Available now for calm and mood: oxytocin, studied for bonding, mood, and a settled feeling, is a live pru product

If calm and mood are your goal, the live option today is oxytocin. You can browse the wider cognition, mood and sleep category, or see plans on the pricing page. When you are ready to take the next step, the smart path is also the easy one.

Common questions

What is the main difference between semax and selank?
Semax is studied for focus, memory, and mental drive, and it works mainly by raising BDNF, a brain growth signal. Selank is studied for calm and stress, and it works mainly on the GABA system. Semax activates; selank steadies.
Is semax or selank better for anxiety?
Selank is the one studied for calm and stress; in Russian trials it was studied in people with generalized anxiety without causing sedation. It is studied for calm, not a treatment for any anxiety disorder. If you have diagnosed anxiety, work with a licensed clinician before trying anything.
Can you take semax and selank together?
Some people combine them for focus plus calm, a pairing sometimes called the Russian nootropic stack. Today these blends are sold research-grade with no prescriber or licensed pharmacy, which is the real risk. Do not stack them with psychiatric medication on your own.
Is semax or selank stronger?
Neither is simply stronger; they do different jobs. Semax has more pronounced nootropic and focus effects, while selank has more pronounced calming effects. Pick by the goal you want, not by strength.
Are semax and selank legal in 2026?
The status is shifting. The FDA removed several peptides from its 503A Category 2 list in April 2026, and its advisory committee reviewed semax, among others, on July 24, 2026. That review is not FDA approval and does not yet place semax on the authorized 503A list. Selank was not on the July 2026 review list.
Do semax and selank have side effects?
Reported side effects are usually mild, such as nasal irritation from the spray or brief overstimulation with semax. Injectable peptides carry an immune-response risk the FDA has flagged. The larger risk today is unverified grey-market sourcing.
Does pru offer semax or selank?
Not today. pru is preparing to offer peptides like semax the regulated way, physician-prescribed and filled by an FDA-regulated 503A pharmacy, pending the July 2026 FDA review. For calm and mood right now, oxytocin is a live pru product.
How are semax and selank usually taken?
Both are most often studied as an intranasal spray or drops, or as a small subcutaneous injection. Intranasal delivery is popular because it reaches the brain quickly. Any real use should be guided by a clinician and filled by a licensed pharmacy.
How does pru keep peptides affordable?
pru runs on an at-cost model. You pay one flat membership, and the medication is passed through at the pharmacy's price with no member markup. Because pru never marks the medication up, we have every reason to push its price down, not up. As pru grows and orders more, we negotiate lower pricing with our partner pharmacies, and those savings go straight to you. Healthcare pricing is usually hidden and inflated; pru is built to sit on your side of it: transparent, at cost, and fighting to make peptides more affordable as we scale.
Do the savings add up if I take more than one peptide?
Yes, and this is where pru's at-cost pricing saves you the most. Because pru never marks the medication up, every vial is priced at cost, so each peptide you add avoids the markup a typical provider builds in. If a physician has you on more than one peptide, or on a stack, that saving repeats on every vial, all under one flat $50 membership instead of a marked-up price on each. The more your protocol includes, the more the difference adds up, which makes doing it the right way a financially responsible choice, not an expensive one.
